Merrittstown is a small unincorporated community in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is located in the southwestern part of the state, approximately 40 miles south of Pittsburgh. Merrittstown has a population of around 150 residents as of the most recent census.
The community was founded in the late 18th century and was named after Samuel Merritt, who owned the land where the town was established. In the early 20th century, Merrittstown was a bustling coal-mining town, with several mines operating in the area. However, as the coal industry declined, the population dwindled, and many of the mines were eventually abandoned.
Today, Merrittstown is a quiet, rural community, surrounded by rolling hills and farms. There are a few small businesses in the area, including a general store and a post office. The town is situated near several popular recreational areas, including Ohiopyle State Park and Laurel Ridge State Park, which offer hiking, camping, and fishing opportunities.
Merrittstown is part of the Albert Gallatin Area School District and is served by the Albert Gallatin Area High School. The community is also home to the Merrittstown Volunteer Fire Company, which provides fire protection and emergency services to the area.
